with an open hand unfurled like a peony?

in the dark with a shot of bourbon and a mirror?

or patiently, waiting in an apartment.
patiently waiting for a story to tell yourself,

a reason or an excuse or a myth or a truth.

I remember the 1,000 nights and wondered

how she kept up keeping him up

keeping him intrigued against his will

to save her own life from the unacceptable

and then marrying it.
