What is this Prayer and for Who?: Jessica Ramirez

April 7, 2020 Kate Belew with Jessica Ramirez (New York City)

I collected water from the thunderstorm in a jar

let it pour over and anoint me.

I was told that fireflies are almost extinct.

I miss the smell of the grass, and their light surrounding me.

And so what is this prayer for and who?

As we all transform

small luna moths to a candle

tracing the flame in the full moon’s light.

And I am thankful for this body.

With every breath I am more awake.

Eyes opened like a tin can to see,

we are intertwined transforming together.

And I ask that we step through this door.

Unlocking our potential in solidarity.

Turning the knob of tomorrow, just like this.

Until the sun kisses my skin and the grass holds my feet.
