Quickly then Burning: Kate Kendrick

April 6, 2020 Kate Belew with Kate Kendrick (New York City)

The streets still slicked with rain

reflections flash like glances

like oil in a pan, quickly then burning.

Past tales are heard as whispers

and tacked up on the old construction sites

dusted with looming loss.

I want to finger paint on their abandoned walls

but the hues are colorless

and so what a loss. What happens when

nature reminds us our control is manufactured?

Do we have a good laugh?

Do we brace til we shake?

I refer to everything as before and after now.
