We Won’t Know Until We Know: Jamie Schaub

March 31, 2020 Kate Belew with Jamie Schaub (Michigan)

We won't know until we know

the softness of soil underfoot

and then we'll know that almost

all of us are waiting

for forgiveness and a little rain.

Did we remember how to be gentle?

An earthworm lesson, tender nettle.

Did we slow down to notice the tiniest of things?

We don't want to lie to you this time.

Instead, we’ll rehearse like the birds

a chorus of truth-tellers.

We’re holding on to each other

our feathers reaching through the window.

Our eyes summon a story of hope

which is a sunrise splicing the branches

beginning to bloom.
