Unwavering Will to Move Through What is Dark: Sammie Hershock

March 18, 2020 Kate Belew with Sammie Hershock (Michigan)

There is an orchard behind the house

We run to it, barefoot on the rocks

The wind is sweeter when unbridled

The grass is softer when it grows free

There are so many things that we could say about earthworms

I wish I had five hearts too

and an unwavering will to move through what is dark

But maybe my spirit adds to the soil, here

I say the smallest prayer

That like the earth, we can be a testament to all things made new.

This rain, I run toward it.
