Some Cold Genius: Emi, Jackie

April 22, 2020, Kate Belew With Emi, Jackie (New York City)

Critics be damned I won't try

to pretend I'm some cold genius

or someone who understands math

and derivatives with their rate of change

the moon changes faces but it doesn't hide it

no shame in the cyclical

and the earth shouldn't need a designated day

when the moon takes the blame for our shit everyday

I tape glow-in-the-dark stars to the ceiling, still

running from that house in the suburbs

and the little grey dog in love with its chains

in the beginning, I only ever made it to the end of the driveway.
