Whichever is Better for the Economy: Emi, Jackie

April 21, 2020, Kate Belew With Emi, Jackie (New York City)

I already want to give up

and end this sentence with doubt

or ellipses, whichever is better for the economy.

We spend a lot of time considering the economy but

outside thunder cracks and we're arguing again

and I don't care, baby, about the dolphins in Venice

or the lions taking naps in the roadways, or mountain lions

who wander through town unafraid like we used to be.

I care about the fund of hands giving

hands and more hands to each other.

Like any good credit score taking a risk on tomorrow

is a finch bending sticks with its soft body, home-making

and here is the window and here is the door.
