They Become Bridges: Jamie Schaub

April 4, 2020 Kate Belew with Jamie Schaub (Michigan)

If the whole world sits still

it will have had more patience than me.

There’s only so many ways to stack our books

before they become bridges.

Our reflections pause and illuminate below

in the pools of our own floors, this home a new magic.

Our bodies longing to sink into mattresses, over and over

and so we give into sighing sleep.

If we lie in our beds and watch the light and shadows meander on walls

If the whole world sits still

We will be left to wonder

what it's all for, anyways.
