Scales of Fish and Buried Strangeness: Tabitha Baca

April 7, 2020 Kate Belew with Tabitha Baca (Mexico City)

When I put down what I knew, I find

my heart wants to speak but

no mouth so it knelt towards feeling

what it avoided all these years

look, when you uncover that fear you find

there are no roots, only

feathers like the scales of fish and buried strangeness.

I wonder, has this always taken up space that

I couldn't see? Just below everything

The stubborn softness emerges, begging

this is me, I was here.
