Growth is a Thing I Read About Once: Meredith Starkman

April 23, 2020, Kate Belew With Meredith Starkman (New York City)

When I play pretend I decide

what angle my leg will bend at.

I decide how saucer my eyes and

how open my mouth, but tell me:

how will we know who won here?

how will we know it's winning?

I want to say something about taxidermy.

The eyes on the wall, the sound of

antlers in a room with no moving air.

A deep witnessing, of I'm not quite sure.

Time passing but the opposite of decay.

Growth is a thing I read about once.

But I am not sure I believe in it.
