Mailed by a Carrier Pigeon: Emi, Jackie

April 23, 2020, Kate Belew With Emi, Jackie (New York City)

This is just another letter

mailed by carrier pigeon.

Every orchid reminds me of my mother

who prefers to soften dirt with cow muck

instead of sand.

Footprints, too, are a kind of offering

when we don't know what to say

beyond the roots of that flower

to the softened earth, our tender friend.

The last time we spoke, I asked

what do you know about making windows?
