Let Me Ask You Again: Paul Benney

March 25, 2020 Kate Belew with Paul Benney (English Countryside)

The ones that you heard when you never said a word.

We waited like that, listening to the echo of none at all,

a dialogue of rogues competing for attention.

Let me explain, the piano keys sound different this morning.

Off key and out of tune our harmonies create dissonance.

I have wanted to say these things for years now,

and now this, we wait, stillness must be the color blue.

What an ordinary miracle, this life, cold, inert

like a blue grey bolder in a stream, always there, always

present. Let me ask you again, what can we make of this water?
