I Was Good at the Tango, Mostly: Hayden Bowen

April 8, 2020 Kate Belew with Hayden Bowen (Los Angeles)

Birdsong and linemen play like radio

the kind with the dial knob in the window

I turn them up like music, I listen

even though I was never a singer in my last life

but I was good at tango, mostly

because I grew up with quick feet

and I could always find the beat in the everyday racket

playing the pans was my favorite instrument

after a plate of eggs on  toast

I have always loved bad coffee, and why?

the bitterness let's me hear the music out the window

without my mind.
