I Consider Lighting That Tinder: Sammie Hershock

April 2, 2020 Kate Belew with Sammie Hershock (Michigan)

There was a time when nothing mattered much

and everything sighed together.

Now it is paper in my hands

almost to ash, I consider lighting that tinder

the soft light - a memory of days past

our bodies both before and after, and so

it passes with time

and will we one day forget this?

when the flower unfolds from ash, will we rise with it?

I want to say something about phoenix, but it's not quite that

A different kind of new beginning-  not soft at the edges or covered in stardust
