A Shattering of Rocks: Cydney Melton

April 17, 2020 Kate Belew With Cydney Melton (Encinitas, California)

I went to the edge of that water to find

a man twirling his daughter in the waves

I consider seahorse, mermaid, foam of

sand, salt and her dress' white lace

I went to the edge of that water and knew

the tide couldn't stay beneath her toes

which maybe is the same for joy, an ebbing

rhythm of blooming and wilting

I have learned something about cycles

sometimes they are meant to be broken

a shattering of rocks across the shoreline

will make new waves

a grateful rippling, change, and then, rest.
